A layer of dust on the coil, thin enough to be invisible, can cost you a noticeable amount of cooling.
The evaporator coil is where heat actually leaves the air, and it does that through direct contact between the air and the fins. Anything coating those fins acts as insulation. A modest layer of dust forces the system to run longer to reach the same temperature, which means higher consumption, more wear on the compressor, and a house that never quite gets cold in August. That is the efficiency cost. The health cost is separate and worse: the coil is permanently wet with condensation, so a dust coated coil is a damp organic surface sitting in the dark, directly in your airflow.
We clean coils chemically rather than mechanically, because the fins are thin aluminium and bend under a brush, and bent fins restrict airflow permanently. A foaming coil cleaner is applied, allowed to lift the build up from between the fins, then rinsed out with the drainage flushed to carry it away. We check fin condition, comb out any existing damage, and treat the coil against microbial regrowth.
