What disinfection and sterilisation involves
Every disinfectant has a contact time on the label, and almost nobody in this industry observes it.
A disinfectant works by staying wet on a surface for a specified period, typically between one and ten minutes depending on the product and the organism. Sprayed and wiped immediately, it has done the job of a cleaning product and not much more.
This is the single largest gap between what disinfection is sold as and what is usually delivered. It is invisible, it cannot be checked afterwards, and it is entirely a matter of whether the operator followed the method.
The second gap is cleaning first. Disinfectants are deactivated by organic soiling: a surface with a film of grease or dust on it will neutralise the product before it reaches anything living. Disinfection on an uncleaned surface is theatre.
So the sequence is always clean, then disinfect, then observe the dwell time, then leave surfaces to air dry rather than wiping them off. Where a surface is food contact or a child's toy, a potable rinse follows after the contact time has elapsed.
For coverage we use a combination of manual application on high touch points, which is where transmission actually happens, and ULV fogging for whole room treatment of soft furnishings and surfaces that cannot be reached by hand. Fogging alone is not sufficient; high touch points need physical contact.
